Locating Insurance policies on a recently deceased relative?
Is there anywhere online that insurance companies report insurance coverage for individuals? My relative passed away recently and looking through all their documentation is driving us nuts. They saved every peice of mail since 1944, looking through all the junk mail is taking forever since it was all just thrown into an extra storage room without any organization.
No, there is no central database. The state insurance department does not track it. This is private information, looking through every piece of paper is likely to be your only option.
Regarding the employer, check with the HR department of the employer. It's going to vary per employer, and by state, if there was any life insurance.
MOST people die with no life insurance in place. And if they were retired, it's highly unlikely that there's still coverage in place through an employer.
Nope. No central database. Check with their atty, check checkstubs for a payment information that might be insurance, check with their atty just in case, try the agents who hold their other policies
good luck
Go through checkbook registries and see if you see payments made to insurance companies. You should be able to go to the bank and show them the death certificate and they will give you a copy of the check from which you can get the policy number. Then just call the insurance company.
Also, many banks/credit card/credit union companies offer life insurance. When you call them to let them know about the passing of your family member, ask them if there was any insurance through their company.
Make sure you keep detailed records of who you talk to and policy numbers and everything else.
if you can find the name of the insurance just call them up and ask them. You will have to have an official death certificate to send them..before they send you anything.and it will have to be from the excutor of the will or whoever has power of attorney.
